DNS
DNS is an acronym for Domain Name System, a distributed
directory of domain names and IP addresses. This distributed directory is implemented by special Internet
servers called nameservers. A domain name (for example: your-domain.com) is simply a pointer to an IP address,
the unique number that identifies the location of a server connected to the Internet. Your Virtual Private Server has
a unique IP address. Domain names are also unique and must be registered with an accredited registrar. It is
likely that you already have a domain, or you will want to register a new one, to identify your VPS.
Is Your Domain Name Already Taken?
Registering a New Domain Name
If your .biz, .com, .info, .net, .org or .us domain name is not already registered, we can
help you register it. Simply use our online Online Order
Forms to order a new .biz, .com, .info, .net, .org or .us domain name, and we
will submit a registration request on your behalf, if you so choose. We can also submit a registration request
at the time you order a new Virtual Server.
We cannot help you register any domain name that is not a .biz, .com, .info, .net, .org or .us
domain. You will need to take care of the registration yourself. See our Domain
Name Registration Guidelines, for step-by-step instructions.
Transferring an Existing Domain Name
You may already have a domain name that is currently being hosted by another provider that you wish to use
instead with your Virtual Server. Our Domain Name Transfer Guidelines
have information that will help you seamlessly transfer the domain name from your current hosting provider to your
AlpineWeb Hosting plan.
