Server Software Update Notification: 07-27-2008
As part of AlpineWeb's ongoing effort to improve performance, recently the vinstall for the MySQL database management system was
updated to no longer enable the InnoDB transactional storage engine by default. InnoDB is typically included with MySQL by
default; however, very few applications and software utilize InnoDB. Additionally, InnoDB-enabled MySQL installations require
more resources than MySQL without InnoDB. Research among all MPS/VPS accounts revealed only a few accounts actually utilize
this feature.
In coming weeks, AlpineWeb will removing the InnoDB support for MySQL from all existing accounts that are not currently using
the feature, according to the schedule below. The update scripts will analyze existing databases for InnoDB usage. All accounts
currently using InnoDB will not be modified. Accounts not using InnoDB (the vast majority) will have the following line added
to the my.cnf configuration file:
skip-innodb
The database will be restarted as part of this update.
This update will be performed during the following normal maintenance windows:
7/29/2008 - Linux MPS/VPS and FreeBSD MPS/VPS v2
- Dulles, Virginia datacenter - between 21:00 - 23:00 local datacenter time (EDT)
- San Jose, California datacenter - between 21:00 - 23:00 local datacenter time (PDT)
7/30/2008 - Linux MPS/VPS and FreeBSD MPS/VPS v2
- Asian datacenters - between 15:00 - 17:00 GMT
- European datacenters - between 20:00 - 22:00 GMT
8/12/2008 - FreeBSD MPS/VPS v3
- Dulles, Virginia datacenter - between 21:00 - 23:00 local datacenter time (EDT)
- San Jose, California datacenter - between 21:00 - 23:00 local datacenter time (PDT)
8/13/2008 - FreeBSD MPS/VPS v3
- Asian datacenters - between 15:00 - 17:00 GMT
- European datacenters - between 20:00 -22:00 GMT
The update does not require any action by customers. Because the database will be restarted as part of this update, it will be
inaccessible for a short period during the update. The inaccessibility should only last a few moments.
In the rare case that InnoDB support is required, this can be enabled with the following option at the time of install:
vinstall mysql -enable-inno
